Wallpaper picture frame DIY
I saw this Rifle Paper Co. picture frame at Target, and loved the patterned frame and matting effect. It was sold out, so I thought I could make it myself for way less than $40!
For this project, you only need 6 things. All of which I already had at home, so this project cost me $0 and took about an hour (including dry time and having a snack).
Supplies:
A picture frame with matting (this is the one I used from IKEA)
Wallpaper scraps (I used leftover from a previous project, you can buy it new here)
Scissors
A pen
A paint brush
I started by measuring and trimming how much paper was needed for the frame. Because I was working with scraps, I didn’t have enough to go all the way around the picture frame and needed to have a seam in the middle (not ideal, but not noticeable by the end). Once the paper was trimmed I applied Mod Podge to the frame using a paint brush and then pressed the paper firmly down onto the frame. I like to glide my fingers back and forth a few times to get all the air bubbles out and insure a good seal.
I let that sit for a minute or two until it was about 80% dry. Then I flipped the frame over and used Mod Podge around the outer edge and back of the frame to wrap the wall paper all the way around the frame. The reason I only let the front dry 80% was so that if I needed to tug on the paper or make any minor tautness adjustments the wallpaper was still workable and not totally cemented. Again, if I had more wall paper to work with I would have left a more generous 1-2 inch lip to wrap around the back to give the smoothest wrapped look possible. You can see one edge of my frame had barely enough paper to wrap around so that edge was harder to get to stick down properly.
After the frame was done I was really happy with it and I momentarily questioned if I wanted to do the matting too. It looked cute with the plain white mat, but I decided to stick with the original plan and go for the full effect!
Wallpapering the matting was even easier than doing the picture frame. I followed the same steps, but because the matting is flat and I had some experience at this point, the mat probably took 5 minutes to complete.
Voila! I am so happy with how the final product turned out. I cannot wait to choose a photo or art print and hang this up in the nursery! What a perfect way to repurpose something I wasn’t using into something unique and cherished. I hope you can give new life to a picture frame in your home! Let me know if you give this DIY a try.
With love,
