DIY Privacy Window Treatments
We are converting my home office into a nursery ahead of Baby Girl’s arrival. My office has big, beautiful windows that provide lots of natural light. A wonderful feature in an office is less than ideal for a nursery. Especially since one of these windows looks directly into our neighbor’s bedroom. I wanted to find a window treatment solution that provided lots of privacy and a little light filtration to give the room a softer afternoon glow. The solution I found was inexpensive ($60 for the whole room!) and took only an afternoon to install - by myself, 7 months pregnant.
I purchased VELIMAX Reeded Glass Window Film from Amazon. My window panels are different widths throughout the room, so I bought the 17.7 and the 23 inch wide sizes. I followed the directions (that are included in each package) exactly and installation was an absolute breeze.
Two tips from my experience:
I found cutting the film after it is on the window with a box cutter (as they suggest in the instructions) to be incredibly difficult. The instructions suggest cutting your film +0.5 inches larger than your measurements all the way around, applying the film, and then trimming with a sharp blade while the film is pressed against the window. Perhaps my box cutter was not sharp enough for this, but I found this step frustrating after the first window and just cut my film to exact measurements for the remaining windows. 100x easier!
Having a squeegee was a huge help! I used the shower squeegee from our bathroom and it got all the air bubbles out so effortlessly! I do not think it could have been done without a squeegee.
I love how this DIY changed the vibe of the room. The light is softer, there is so much more privacy, and I still get plenty of light shining through when my shutters are open. It’s exactly what I needed to feel comfortable in the space with a newborn, and it is helping visually and emotionally transition my space from a work space to a nursery. I hope you try this in your home and let me know what you think!
With love,
